About the Children’s Health Research Center (CHRC): Helping Kids through Research

The CHRC, directed by Gary C. Schoenwolf, Ph.D., serves as a catalyst for developing fruitful research partnerships between clinicians and basic scientists, each of whom have unique qualities important for solving the difficult problems associated with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases in children. Fellows and junior faculty in pediatrics are partnered with basic scientists in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, cancer research and neurobiology, who serve not only as colleagues but also as mentors. An internal advisory board, consisting of both eminent scientists and up-and-coming junior faculty at the University of Utah, monitors the trainees’ progress and provides guidance and support, maximizing the opportunity for trainees to develop into successful physician-scientists. An external advisory board, consisting of nationally prominent basic scientists and physician-scientists, ensures that national standards for training and scientific research are being met, and provides input into national trends. The new partnerships formed in the CHRC bridge diverse fields and take advantage of the advances occurring in one field to enhance research progress in another field. In short, the CHRC provides an unique an exciting opportunity to train academic physicians who will be directly involved in translating advances in our understanding of basic science to improvements the health care of children.

Mission

The mission of the CHRC is to groom the next generation of academic physician-scientists in pediatrics:

  • To mentor the next generation of academic physician-scientists in pediatrics.
  • To foster the development of partnerships among clinical and basic scientists.
  • To enhance the research enterprise of the University of Utah.
  • To facilitate the translation of advances in science to improvements in the health care of children.

Vision

  • Establish a program and environment where physician-scientists are developed and brought together with basic researchers to ensure that basic research has the greatest chance of benefiting ailing children.
